COFFEE
Arabica coffee was the first coffee tree introduced to Vietnam by the French in the nineteenth century and is now one of the world’s two most popular coffee types. Despite being an early imported coffee variety, Robusta coffee production is a popular type of coffee cultivated in Vietnam, accounting for approximately 93 percent of the area.
Nowadays, Vietnam is the world’s second-largest coffee exporter behind Brazil; moreover, Vietnamese Robusta coffee leads in export volume worldwide. Vietnamese coffee is currently available in more than 80 countries and territories. On the other hand, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, coffee is a vital commodity and one of Vietnam’s top ten exports.
COFFEE PRODUCTION
According to the International Coffee Organization (ICO), within 30 years, from 1986 to 2016, Vietnam’s coffee output rose from 18,400 tons to 1.76 million tons, a roughly 100-fold increase, with up to 90-95 percent of production being exported. In 2020, Vietnam had 680,000 hectares of coffee with an average yield of 1.5 million tons/year, exported 1.57 million tons in the year with the average price was 1,751.2 USD/ton and export value reached more than 2.74 billion US dollars.
COFFEE HARVEST SEASON
Overall, coffee output and value dropped by 8.8 percent in volume and 7.2 percent in value in 2020 compared to 2019 due to the numerous effects of the covid-19 epidemic, which disrupted supply chains worldwide. However, this epidemic element has a positive impact on coffee prices, with the export price of coffee reaching $ 1,839 per ton in the first six months of 2021, an 8.8 percent rise over the same time in 2020.
Coffee produced in various nations have distinct characteristics and do not have the same harvest. The coffee harvest season in Vietnam typically lasts from the end of October to the end of the next year, depending on the region. Harvesting Arabica coffee usually takes place 1-2 months before Robusta coffee.
